Nepalese Silk
Silk production in Nepal has Twenty Eight Year old history. Its production scale is continuously growing since then. And hence helped to uplift economic status of farmers who are rearing Silk worm to produce silk Co-coons from which fine silk thread is taken. So produced Silk is either knitted to different products like shawls, scarves, and dresses of various designs or weaved to different types of fabrics which can be tailored as per your requirement. Silk Production Process:
Mulberry Orchard is planted. After two years mulberry Orchard is ready for Silk Worm rearing. Silk Worm egg are available in Sericulture Development Section. The Silk Worm are technically reared in rearing house by feeding Mulberry leaves.
Then Silk Worm Co-coons are produced for commercial purpose. Thus produced Co-coons are used for making raw Silk or Spawn Silk (by Nepal Resam Charkha) or local reeling machine. Spawn Silk is then used for making varieties of clothes by knitting or weaving.
Characters of Nepali Silk and Silk Products
- Nepali Silk is the product of Bi-voltine Silk worm races. So it is high quality silk as compared to multi-voltine Silk.
- Nepali silk is produced mostly in sub-tropical hilly region of the country having better quality than tropical Silk.
- Recently, spawn silk is being produced in Nepal using Japanese model Nepal Resham Charkha and such Silk is also of good quality.
- Nepali Silk (Resham) is original product of Nepal. It is 100% pure Silk. Spawning, knitting, weaving and finishing are done mostly by Nepalese women.
- Dyeing is done by using locally available natural materials. So, the colour is permanent. There is not any mixture of artificial colour, poisonous and chemical ingredients.
- Nepalese raw silk is also used in making Pashmina and Carpets giving them unique finishing.
- Nepalese Silk products have shown good promise in external markets of Asia, Europe, United States and many other Countries.
